The Houston-Galveston Trauma Institute

History

The Houston-Galveston Trauma Institute was incorporated in the state of Texas in October 2002 by a group of mental health professionals on a mission to improve the mental health of traumatized people by providing training and education to mental health professionals and the public.

To begin, the group established a yearlong intensive fellowship program that not only trained mental health professionals in the treatment of trauma disorders, but also offered the lowest sliding-scale service in Houston in an outpatient clinic.

The Houston-Galveston Trauma Institute also began collaborations with many agencies to train their mental health and support professionals. Initially, HGTI established a lecture series that provided Houston-area mental health and helping professionals with the knowledge of nationally known experts in the treatment of people with trauma related mental health disorders.

Today, the Institute focuses its energy on training mental health professionals and the public, and continues collaborating with other agencies. These efforts include our training of clinicians in the Harris County Hospital District outpatient public health clinics, group consultations for Jewish Family Services and a social work internship program with the University of Houston Law Center Immigration Clinic serving people seeking asylum in the U.S. because of international trauma, among others.

Our work is supported by grants from the Cullen Foundation, the Edith and Robert Zinn Foundation and other generous donors who are interested in international trauma.
